Vitamins are nutrients essential to human health and are present in almost all types of foods. Most people all over the world use a vitamin supplements to ensure sufficient vitamin intake, for treatment or prevention of disease.
Food supplements come in a variety of forms: traditional tablets, capsules, and powders, as well as certain foods (drinks, energy bars) that are commercially fortified with vitamins and/or other nutritional essentials such as minerals.
Based on their solubility, vitamins are divided into two categories: water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and B-complex vitamins: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12. The fat-soluble vitamins are vitamin A, D, E and K. On the market most of the food supplements usually contain a combination of both water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins and sometimes other ingredients as well. In this case, we are talking about multivitamin products.
QUALITY CONTROL
Accurate quantitative measurements for vitamins are required to ensure product quality according to product specification and regulatory compliance as well as to monitor recommended daily vitamin intake. The food supplements legislation stipulates that the amount of any individual substance with a nutritional or physiological effect must be indicated on the labelling of the food supplement.
Established methods for vitamin analysis include different techniques, but liquid chromatography with different detection modes (UV, mass spectrometry) is generally used as most appropriate for reliable quantification of multiple vitamins of interest in a variety of matrices, often complex samples.
